GUTIERREZ, Roger

Roger Gutierrez was born in Cebu 1947. ( Land and waterscape impressions) Being a neighbor of Martino Abellana, dean of Cebuano artist apprenticed in the Abellana household from the age of 11 of 13, together with the young Romulo Galicano. At the age of 21, returned and took more lessons under Abellana for another six month, and was encourage by the old man seek his luck in Mla. Arriving in Mla, he sought tutelage under Mla- based Galicano, from 1977 to 1979. After four years of serious painting, was disillusioned by some art dealers, and took on odd jobs in constructions, secutiry, theater, and a bakery. Both Abellana and Galicano encourage him to persevere in impressionism, however. Likes to paint mangrove swamps of lotus ponds and realistic still lifes. Had two-man shows with fellow Cebuano Madronio Cempron, Hidalgo Gallery, 1978. Member, Rizal Artist Federation and Antipolo Visual Artist Asso. Won a silver medal at the 1978 AAP Annual, and 2nd prize for oil and 1st hon mention, back and white category, AAP Semi- Annual of the same year. [BIOS-JS]
