ARCILLA, Ros

 

Rosalio Beltran Arcilla, Jr. was born on May 1, 1939 in Caramoan, Camarines Sur and is best known for monuments and abstract figurative sculptures in aluminum, bronze, jade, wood, and glass. In 1960, he graduated from the University of the Philippines with a BFA, Major in Sculpture. In 1975, he took up advanced studies in sculpture in the University of Hawaii and received a scholarship grant from the French government to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1980. He taught at University of the East, and was a board member of the Society of Philippine Sculptors. He worked as an art director for a number of printing companies, and wrote, as well as illustrated, for Extra, Sampaguita, and Family Komiks. He represented the Philippines at the International Art Exhibit in Osaka, Japan, 1967 and the Paris-Sud Biennale, 1973.

Arcilla won first prize, gold medal, and grand prize for the sculpture category of the Automobile Association of the Philippines Annual Art Competition in 1978. His first one-man show was held at the Hilton Hotel in Manila in 1971. His notable works include: Bronze Lady, Skyland Plaza, Makati.
